On2 Fusion Dance Company

Freddy Ruiz
Director
The director of On 2 Fusion is Ferdinand Ruiz a. k. a. Freddy. He is of Puerto Rican heritage, born and raised in Brooklyn, NY. His love for dancing began in the mid 80's when he was introduced to break dancing on the streets of Brooklyn. Several years later, when old enough to enter New York clubs, he witnessed as 'House' evolved from the street dances of the time. Seeing this transformation left an impression on Freddy that he would later apply to New York Style Mambo dancing.

He first caught the performance bug in high school, break dancing in the 1985 Christmas Show, and soon began exploring other styles of dance. Without any formal training, in the late 80's and early 90's Freddy began learning Salsa in various clubs throughout the city. His passion for salsa led him to seek out formal classes, and in 2001 he began studying under James Carr at the Salsa de Hoy dance studio. This was his first introduction to the On 2 style of dancing, which led him to take Eddie Torres' partner work classes, where he honed his social dance skills gaining a better understanding of leading technique.

In the Summer of 2002, Freddy's curiosity brought him to the Santo Rico Dance School, and in 2003 he was asked to join the Xibicion Santo Rico dance team by director Thomas Guerrero. Later that year, he began training and performing with the Yamulee Bajari dance team under direction of Osmar Perones. Freddy eventually returned to the Santo Rico School where he became captain of the semi-professional dance team and also taught various classes including the challenging Saturday partner work class along side Thomas Guerrero.

It was in 2003, when he began training in Afro-Cuban dance and rhythms with master Felix "Pupi" Insua, that his outlook on dance began to change. While he initially learned Afro-Cuban as a way to improve his Salsa, Freddy soon began to fuse what he learned from Pupi with his salsa background to develop his own unique style. It is this style and technique that he currently shares in his New York Rumba class.

Freddy has performed his blend of Latin rhythms at venues such as Club Cache, Piel Canella dance social, Colombian Festival Queens, Lincoln Center, Cuban Parade NY, NY Salsa Congress 04-07, P.R. Salsa Congress, Philadelphia Salsa Congress, and the South Street Seaport Hispanic Festival.

Learning new dances such as Argentine Tango and Flamenco, his style continues to evolve, and Freddy now teaches his salsa based fusion independently. He is currently teaching at Dardo Galletto Studios, near Times Square, and performing at clubs throughout New York. His dance team, On2 Fusion, will start performing in the Summer of 2009, representing Freddy Ruiz's vision for the evolution of Salsa.
